Native Americans occupied the region that included the present-day St. Louis before Europeans settled in that area. Europeans were the first to explore that area. The first recorded Europeans to visit St. Louis were French Explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette. La Salle, five years later, gifted the region to France as part of Louisiana. In 1764, France lost the Seven Years’ War; Auguste Chouteau and Pierre Laclede founded what would become present-day St. Louis. St. Louis was transferred to the French First Republic in 1800, but all of the colonial lands in the area were still under the administration of the Spanish officials. Immigrants from Ireland and Germany arrived in St. Louis in the 1840s, increasing the city's population from less than 20,000 people in 1840 to more than 160,000 people in 1860. St. Louis was in a slave state, which means that some people used slave labor on their farms and businesses. In 1876, St. Louis voted to secede from St. Louis County and become an independent city. However, it only became an independent city in March 1877 after a recount of the votes. St. Louis, Missouri, supported the Jim Crow laws in the early 1900s, and in 1916, the city passed a residential segregation ordinance, which was later challenged in court by the NAACP. St. Louis has improved its laws allowing minority races to live and conduct business freely within the city.

If you like the great outdoors, St. Louis has several parks and recreational areas where you can carry out different outdoor activities. You can go bird watching at Forest Park, take a self-guided audio tour, rent a boat, and have fun at the Post-Dispatch Lake. If you like hiking or biking, some of the best hiking trails in the city can be found at Mississippi Greenway, Riverfront Trail, and Gravois Greenway. Other parks you can visit include Missouri Botanical Garden, Citygarden, and Tower Grove Park to enjoy a nice day out.
