Meridian city was established in 1891. It was started on an Onweiler farm found north of the city's present site. In its early days, it was known as Hunter. In 1893, an IOOF lodge was set up in the area under the name Meridian since it was situated on the Boise Meridian. This prompted the town to be renamed Meridian.
