History of Meridian

History of Meridian

idaho history

Meridian was initially called Hunter, only to be renamed in 1893 when the Independent Order of Odd Fellowship built a lodge located on Boise Meridian. The village of Meridian was incorporated in 1903. Initially a dry, arid region, it became a fertile ranching community after ranchers established an elaborate irrigation system in 1890. This initiative also fulfilled the requirements to obtain a patent for the land from the U.S. Land Office. Between 1903 to 1941, the original Meridian townsite grew due to settlers from Missouri infiltrating the area. When they arrived, they established local institutions and filed for homestead lands. With the construction of Interurban railways and then later the Union Pacific Railways, the town experienced an influx of many people from surrounding towns and cities, thus expanding its economy. Until the early 1940s, settlers established profitable fruit orchids along the railway lines. Then, in 1941, Meridians' status changed from a village to a city. In 1929, toward the demise of the Great Depression, Ada County Dairymen's cooperative creamery began operations, providing much-needed provisions for families in Meridian. It was a large enterprise with a Wyeth Laboratories affiliation, continuing until 1970, when it moved its milk processing to Caldwell. Today, Meridian is the largest growing city in Idaho, experiencing a population boom over the last three decades. With an ideal location for interconnecting highways, it is a perfect spot for enterprises and business ventures of all kinds. As a result, Meridian has become the retail and commercial development center in Idaho, with hundreds of retail merchants and professional services. It is a thriving city that is certainly the heart of Treasure Valley.
