History of Idaho
History of Idaho

One of the oldest pieces of evidence of human life and activity in North America is found hidden under the soils of Idaho in the form of stone tools, arrowheads, and animal bone fragments. When in 1805, present-day Idaho was entered by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, it is believed that it was inhabited by 8,000 Native Americans.
What shaped the history of this state was the trade of fur. First, there was the Missouri Fur Company that caused the European invasion into the region. Then there was the British-owned Hudson Bay’s company followed by other ambitious traders. Even though it was difficult for Americans to continue fur trading due to the long-distance supply lines, they found ways to manage. There were also missionaries working in the area who played a vital role in attracting the Natives. A lot of non-indigenous people began settling in this unorganized territory then known as Oregon Country. This included Germans, Irish, English, African, and even Chinese.
Idaho was formally established separately as a state in 1863. Before that, it was a part of Washington.
