History

History

history arkansas

Before European settlers moved to the area that is present-day Portland, the Chinook, Multnomah, and Clackamas communities lived in the area during the 1800s. Pioneer settlers moved to the area in Willamette Valley in the 1840s. The settlement was known as “Stumptown” and “The Clearing” because the settlers had to cut down many trees to settle in the area. The early success of Portland can be attributed to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean through the Columbia and Willamette Rivers and the vast agricultural land in Tualatin Valley through the Great Plank Road, which is now known as U.S Route 26. As more people moved to Portland, the city developed into a gritty port town and was one of the most dangerous port cities in the United States. There were numerous gambling dens, bordellos, saloons, and boarding houses that miners frequented during the California Gold Rush. The city’s population grew in the 1930s to more than 300,000 people, and during World War II, people of Japanese descent were dispatched to internment camps. The city transitioned from a gritty town to a hippie town, becoming a hub for the hippie subculture and psychedelic culture. From May 2020, there were major protests in the city following the murder of George Floyd by the police.
