Native American tribes held meetings in the current location of Grand Forks thousands of years before encountering the whites. French fur traders, trappers, and explorers were the first non-natives to come to the area, naming it "Les Grandes Fourches," which translates to Grand Forks. In the mid-18th century, Grand Forks became a significant trading post for the French. The area was a French colonial territory until the Treaty of 1818, which gave ownership to the United States. Native Americans remained active even after the acquisition with a series of conflicts until the late 1800s, when the U.S. government evacuated them and created a post office. In 1880, the Great North Railway arrived in Grand Forks, significantly attracting more people. Establishing the University of North Dakota in 1883 and the ease of access to the area led to a population boom and economic growth. Establishing an Air Force base in Grand Forks in1954 also influenced economic and population growth. In the late 20th century, Grand Forks experienced significant growth due to private and public developments that attracted more people and businesses. Since the beginning of the 21st century, Grand Forks has grown exceedingly, and a mobile home is the quickest way to become part of the developing urban population.
