History of Raleigh

History of Raleigh

north carolina history

Raleigh is North Carolina’s capital city, and it joins Durham and Chapel Hill in the technology-rich Research Triangle. Designed in 1792 after the American Revolution, the central North Carolina city was called Wake Courthouse before being renamed for Sir Walter Raleigh. During the Civil War, Raleigh was a Confederate headquarters until April 13, 1865. On that day, General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Union troops occupied the city without meeting resistance. After the Civil War ended, Raleigh experienced some difficulties during Reconstruction. During the early 20th century, Raleigh city leaders sought to diversify the city’s urban fabric. Construction of residences, schools, hospitals, and churches soon followed. More railroad traffic, textile production, and building construction helped to further expand the city. From 1900 to 1920, the city’s population increased by 79% as more infrastructure enabled business and residential growth. Skilled professionals such as physicians, attorneys, and educators were drawn to Raleigh. An influx of families followed, leading to suburban area growth. In 1959, the Research Triangle Park was established, creating tens of thousands of high-tech employment opportunities. Raleigh is also a major eastern North Carolina shipping hub. After World War II, many manufacturers set up shop in the expanding city. Processed foods, communications and electronic equipment, and computers have become major regional industries. Raleigh is also a textile and chemical research and development center. Finally, Raleigh has become a services hub. Many insurance firms have established regional headquarters or home offices in the city.
