History of North Carolina

Buckle up, because there are many layers to the history of this southern land. Charlotte, North Carolina, was incorporated in 1768. The area was named after Princess Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz who was the wife of King George III. This is where it got the nickname “The Queen City.” You will want to know where the now popular NBA team got their name The Hornets. During the American Revolution, a British General, Lord Cornwallis, called the town “A Hornet’s Nest of Rebellion.” The people declared independence from England before the revolution was even completed due to their unity and determination. Many residents will tell you that is true to this day as the city takes pride in standing up for what they want and believe in. The addition of a railroad created the first growth boom for this land. Charlotte, North Carolina then played a big role in the Civil War, as a confederate headquarter and a hospital. The next big population and industry boom was in the early 1900s when Charlotte became a cotton mill hub. A few decades later, the city was also a predominant part of the Civil Rights movement where sit-ins, marches, demonstrations, and speeches took place throughout the city.
