The Lenape tribes (Delaware Indian) occupied what is now Jersey City. While looking for an alternative route to East Asia, Henry Hudson stopped his small vessel at Sandy Hook, Harsimus Cove, and Weehawken Cove along the North River (Hudson River). During his stops, he surveyed the area and interacted with the inhabitants. In 1621, the Dutch West India Company began to manage the area. Michael Reyniersz Pauw received a land grant with the condition he populated the area with at least fifty people within four years. The land covered what is now Hoboken and Jersey City, but he failed to bring in tenants in the area and was forced to sell the land back in 1633. Communities started to pop up in the area during the late 1660s. In 1804, Alexander Hamilton wanted to increase manufacturing in New York City. Created by Alexander Hamilton and other individuals, the Associates of the Jersey Company kickstarted the development of Jersey City. The Town of Jersey was incorporated on January 28, 1820, and became reincorporated as a city on January 23, 1829, becoming part of Hudson County. The city continued to grow until the 1970s when it experienced a period of urban decline. Many rich residents left the city because of rising high crime levels, political corruption, and civil unrest. Economic and population growth returned to the city in the 1980s due to the construction of many high-rise buildings. Jersey City started as a docking and manufacturing town, but its economy has become more diversified with new sectors such as finance and retail.
