History
History
Newark is one of the oldest cities in the US with its formation dating back to 1666. Newark was founded by Puritan colonists led by Robert Treat. After the union of the Connecticut and New Haven colonies, they looked forward to setting up a Puritan theocracy to avoid losing political powers to other believers. Connecticut successfully established a colony with strict rules that resembled those previously used in Milford, Connecticut. The city earned its name from a preacher, Abraham Pierson, a previous preacher in England's "Newark-on-Trent." He quoted, 'the community reflected the new task at hand and should be named "New Ark," for "New Ark of the Covenant." The name was therefore shortened to Newark. The Hackensack sold their land on the Passaic River to the Treat and party in exchange for gunpowder, a hundred bars of lead, guns, pistols, blankets and ten pairs of breeches. The settlers then built houses at the intersection of Broad Street and Market Street. The Puritan Church had complete control of the community until 1733 when Josiah Ogden harvested wheat on a Sunday after a lengthy rainstorm considered a" sabbath breaking." After that, he was punished and left the church. He joined the Episcopalian missionaries who arrived in 1746 and built a church that broke the Puritan theocracy. Elimination of the last vestiges of the theocracy took 70 years when the right to hold office was granted to non-protestants. In 1880, the population had grown to 136500, which continually increased to 200000 three decades later. Since then, the city's potential has been limitless, and it is by far the greatest industrial center in New Jersey.
