Middlesex County was the site of the first armed conflict of the American Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775. Years after that, Boston annexed several of its cities and towns, including Charlestown and Brighton in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, resulting in enlargement and accretion toward Suffolk County.
Currently, Middlesex-North District only includes the city of Lowell and its neighboring towns of Billerica, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, Westford, Wilmington, and Lowell, the nation's first planned industrial community. Also, a group of 44 towns and cities in the county make up the Middlesex-South District which is the larger portion of the county.
The long-time county seat is Cambridge, which is also home to Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, some of the best universities in the country. Boston College in Chestnut Hill–Newton, Tufts University in Medford, and Bentley College and Brandeis University in Waltham are among the other higher education institutions also in Middlesex County.
