Founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1639, Boston is one of the United States oldest municipalities. It was founded by Puritan settlers from the British town of Puritan. The territory played a crucial role during the American Revolution. When the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act in 1765, a Boston mob attacked the homes of Thomas Hutchinson, the then Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts and Andrew Oliver, who was the official tasked with enforcing the Act. Boston citizens also rebelled against the Tea Act, which many saw as a means to force them into accepting taxes established by the Townshend Act. The angry Boston citizens overthrew a whole shipment of tea sent by the East India Company into the Boston Harbor. This event was vital in the series of events that led to the revolution as the British government responded with the Coercive Acts, which authorized compensation for the damaged tea. This move angered colonists and led to the American Revolutionary War, during which Boston's territory was besieged for almost a year. The British Army captured the Boston territory during the war after the battle of Bunker Hill. A prolonged stalemate followed due to both parties having suffered long-lasting damage and a limited supply of weapons. Weeks later, George Washington took over the militia, which eventually sent the British out of American territory. The day this victory was achieved is still celebrated annually as "Evacuation Day" in Boston.

Sports
Boston locals can all agree that there is something special about the sports teams in the city. The biggest and most popular sports team in the city is Bolton Celtics, who play in the NBA. The Celtics are the most successful team in the NBA, having won the championship 17 times. Fans of the Celtics troop to TD Garden to watch their team in action on matchdays. The Boston Bruins are an NHL team, and they also play their home games at the TD Garden. Other professional sports teams in the city include New England Patriots (football) and Boston Red Sox (baseball).

Boston is home to Boston Common, the first public park in the United States. The park features vast open green space suitable for picnics, a carousel, space for ice skating, and a swimming pool. The park is also the starting point of the famous Freedom Trail, a trail which leads to 16 historical sites in Boston. Other popular parks in the city include The Public Garden, Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, Rose Kennedy Greenway, Fenway Park, The Esplanade and Boston Harbor Islands.
