Frederick Town was founded in 1745 and named after Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron of Baltimore. However, there is also a chance it was named after Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales. A significant battle of its past was The Battle of Monocacy which took place south of Frederick on July 9, 1864. Though the Confederate forces won, they were slowed down, so Union reinforcements could reach Washington, D.C. After the battle, the city paid Confederate Gen. Jubal A. Early reparations amounting to $200,000 to avoid destruction; the last bond was redeemed on October 1, 1951. Frederick city has been at the center of American history for centuries. Many soldiers from the French and Indian War to the Civil War walked the same streets as we do today, as did George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, Abraham Lincoln, Francis Scott Key, Robert E. Lee, and several others. In the early days, Frederick was traversed by the B&O Railroad, the Historic National Road, and the C&O Canal. Currently, the period is now remembered in museums and historic sites. Here, you can eat at an old turnpike inn, play on an interactive HO scale railroad layout, or sleep in a canal lock keeper's house. The South Mountain State Battlefield, National Museum of Civil War Medicine, and dozens of Civil War Trails markers narrate the stories of ordinary citizens who lived here when armies invaded. However, stories of post-battle compassion helped humanize this terrible conflict. A half-century earlier, the first American saint lived in the northern part and was assisted by the Daughters of Charity sisters. There were central street communities with unique shops, restaurants, breweries, distilleries, and art galleries.
