The first people to live in the area that is now Evansville, Indiana, were Paleo-Indians in 8,000 BC. Native American tribes such as Miami, Piankeshaw, Wyandot, Delaware, and Shawnee have lived in this area for many years in the 1400s. French hunters and trappers were the first Europeans to visit this area. The Delaware Tribe relinquished the area in 1805 to the governor of Indiana Territory, General William Henry Harrison. Evansville, Indiana, was formally founded in 1812 and incorporated as a city in 1817. Because of its location near the oxbow in the Ohio River, Evansville, Indiana, is also referred to as “River City” or “Crescent Valley.” Evansville’s continued to grow economically, with the city’s main industries being agriculture, transportation, and manufacturing. After the Civil War, Evansville experienced immense economic growth since many steamboats on the Ohio River made a stop in the city. The Ohio River flood of 1937 did manage to slow down the economic growth of Evansville because of the destruction it caused. However, World War II helped improve the city’s economy after the Great Depression. The city was a major player in the production of military tanks used by the U.S. Army during World War II. Evansville’s growth has continued steadily through the 20th and 21st centuries.

While living in Evansville, one of the things you can do is watch and support some of the professional teams in the city. Evansville is home to the Bosse Field, a historic baseball stadium that opened in 1915 and is the third-oldest ballpark still in use after Fenway Park (Boston) and Wrigley Field (Chicago). You can watch the Evansville Otters play their Frontier League matches at Bosse Field. Other professional sports teams in this city include Evansville Thunderbolts (Ice Hockey), Evansville Legends Fc (Soccer), and Midwest Hooligans (Soccer).

If you have children, you can take them to the Children’s Museum of Evansville for a fun and learning experience. This museum has child-friendly exhibits and offers children an interactive learning experience. Some of the fun features in this museum that your children are guaranteed to enjoy include cooking food, creating art, the Speak Loud gallery, and Amazing Castle, among others. Other places you can take your kids to have fun in Evansville include the Hartman Arboretum, Mesker Park Zoo, the Eastland Mall, and Willard Library.

You can visit the USS LST Ship Memorial, the last operational landing ship used in World War II. Book a tour for you and your family, learn about the ship and its role in World War II, and visit some of the areas on the ship, such as the main deck and galley. Evansville has numerous parks that are perfect for many outdoor activities. If you like biking or hiking, you can go to the American Discovery Train, one of the best trail systems in the city. Some of the parks you can visit in Evansville include Garvin Park, Vann Park, Bayard Park, Howell Park, and Fulton Park, among others.
