Laramie was established in the 1860s as a tent city close to the Overland Stage Line route on the Union Pacific Railroad. The railroad read Laramie on May 4, 1868, and the first passenger service began on May 10, 1868, encouraging entrepreneurs to build permanent buildings in the area. Laramie got its name from Jacques Laramie, a French-Canadian trapper named Jacques Laramie, who was the first person to visit the area in 1817. It is said that Jacques Laramie vanished into the Laramie Mountains in the 1820s while exploring the area. Most landmarks in Wyoming are also named after Jacques Laramie. Laramie has played a big part in advancing equal rights for women. Wyoming was recognized as a territory in 1869 and became the first legislature to pass a bill granting women equal political rights. In 1870, five women from Laramie became the first women in the world to serve on a jury. On September 6, 1870, Louisa Swain was the first woman in the U.S. to cast a legal vote in a general election. In 1998, the murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming, captured the world's attention and became a symbol of a campaign against hate crimes. The murder was the subject of an award-winning play later adapted as a movie known as The Laramie Project.

While living in Laramie, Wyoming, you can do plenty of things. One of the things you can do is visit the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site. This prison has a lot of history, and it is famed for housing the famous Wild West outlaw Butch Cassidy. The Wyoming Territorial Prison was used as a prison from 1872 to 1901 when it was turned over to the University of Wyoming to be used as an agricultural research station. In addition to guided tours on specific days, this historic site also features a nature trail, picnic area, exhibits, and a gift shop.
