Salem is a city with a rich history. It is one of the oldest cities in the country, with human activities taking place as early as the 1600s. Salem became the county seat of Marion County in March 1849 and Oregon's territorial capital in 1852. Salem was officially incorporated as a city in 1857 and started as a de facto state capital in 1859. However, in 1864, a vote was done to determine the state capital — Salem won overwhelmingly. Therefore, it became Oregon's official state capital in 1864. Salem is the site of one of the earliest human settlements in the region. This is evident through a Methodist mission, a move started by John Lee in June 1841. The building was located near Tchimikiti, a Kalapuyan village. After constructing a building for his mission, he started a small town called Chemeketa. In 1846, Chemeketa was renamed Salem by William Wilson. He gave it the name from the Arabic word "Salam," which means peace. Most of Salem's early history is based on several years of farming and agriculture. The city's fertile area made it possible for farming various cash crops. Salem remains the most developed city in Oregon, with many of the economic activities taking place here.
