History of Norman

oklahoma history

The Oklahoma Territory was surveyed by the United States Land Office in 1870. The department hired Abner E. Norman as the chairman of the central surveyor of the Indian Territory. The words “Noman Camp” were burned into a tree elm around the watering hole by the surveyor’s crew. The crew was taunting their younger supervisor, unaware that the city would later be named after him. The name was maintained by other settlers who came to the city in 1889. The city was primarily established along the Santa Fe Railroad. During that time, it hosted a freight station and passenger depot. Hence, it became the railway headquarters. The depot continued expanding as businesses in the city continued to grow. The Santa Fe Railway announced its last expansion in 1909, and the depot was deeded to Norman in 1972. The Santa Fe Depot was preserved as a historic landmark due to its significant contribution to Norman’s growth. Currently, the building is used to benefit the entire community by hosting parties, banquets, and meetings. It also offers daily Amtrak passenger services. Even today, Norman is still making history. It was recognized amongst the most growing cities in Oklahoma. Its public school, Norman Public School, was also recently ranked the best in the state. Additionally, it is currently revitalizing its downtown and intends to enhance its infrastructure and population in its long-term plans.
