History of Las Cruces
History of Las Cruces
Settlers created Las Cruces in 1849; however, other theories about its establishment exist. According to one theory, Indigenous people attacked a bishop, a priest, a Mexican Army colonel, a captain, four trappers, and four choir boys along the Rio Grande in the 18th century, and only one child survived. In their honor, locals erected crosses, and the name El Pueblo del Jardín de Las Cruces (the City of the Garden of Crosses) was born. Another theory is that locals initially established the Doa Ana Colony in 1844. To relieve overpopulation, Lt. Delos Sackett mapped out 84 lots to form the town of Las Cruces from the few homesteads scattered across the territory south of the Doa Ana village. Parties also fought the Mexican-American War around the same time. After the end of the war, La Mesilla was formed in Mexico by people who did not want to be a part of the United States. They engaged in ranching and relied on artists and merchants to create what they required. Wagons brought most of the goods into the area via the Santa Fe Trail and Camino Real, and while wagons could carry a lot of cargo, they had their limitations. The railroad owners built a line from Rincon, New Mexico, to El Paso, Texas, passing through Las Cruces, three miles south of Mesilla. The first train entered the growing town on April 26, 1881, bringing as much fanfare as it could manage. The first depot was a 16-by-34-foot timber frame structure. To make a lasting positive impression on visitors, town officials changed the route's name that connects the railroad station between the downtown section from the Depot to Las Cruces. It was the town's first paved street. Meanwhile, the Las Cruces Town Company recognized the potential for expansion.
