Manchester was once known as being home to the world’s largest cotton mills at one time. The Amoskeag falls that remained the source of waterpower that fueled the economic growth of Manchester determined the city’s location. Initially, the falls attracted Penacook Indians whose occupation in the area was fishing. Judge Samuel Blodget saw possibilities in the city characterized by the falls. As a result, he planned the creation of the first canal along the Amoskeag falls. Combining the canal and the Middlesex Canal in Massachusetts, a maneuverable waterway was constructed in Boston. With the establishment of the first cotton mills, the area’s original name changed from Harrytown to Derryfield and then to Manchester. It was elevated to a city by General John Stark, a Revolutionary Warfighter. Fueled by the establishment of streetcar suburbs, the city began to expand. The Manchester Street Railway marked the city as home to a streetcar network. The strike of textile industry workers and the Great Depression hit the city so hard that its economy declined. Fortunately, Manchester’s economy greatly benefitted from World War 11. The city was well positioned and fully equipped with industries to sustain the war. The post-war period saw the growth of new urban projects. The Mall of New Hampshire, in addition to other important buildings, were constructed. Additionally, high-tech centers for smart manufacturing were established in the area. Manchester continues to grow steadily with more commercial centers and residential architecture opening in the city.
