Long before the Europeans came, and even longer before anyone thought about buying a condo in Great Falls, Salish Indians hunted bison on the land that would later be known as Great Falls. In the 17th century, Piegan Blackfeet Indians arrived in the region, pushed the Salish into the surrounding mountains and claimed the area that is now known as Great Falls. The region remained the territory of the Blackfeet even after the US claimed the region in 1803 for the Louisiana Purchase. Throughout the 19th century, the land of Great Falls passed politically through many hands. It was a part of the unincorporated frontier until 1854 and later became part of the Dakota Territory in 1861. In 1863, the land was incorporated into the Idaho Territory and then finally joined the Montana Territory on May 28, 1864. Upon Montana’s admission to statehood, Great Falls became a part of that state. In 1883, the settlement of Great Falls was founded by Paris Gibson who, when visiting the area, was impressed by the possibility of creating an industrial city near the falls to utilize the power provided by hydroelectricity. In the years to follow, Great Falls quickly became a thriving industrial and supply center. In 1890, the construction of a hydroelectric dam within Black Eagle Falls provided the city, and the state of Montana, with the first creation of hydroelectric power. With the arrival of railroads, a strong agricultural market and regional shopping hub, the city continued to grow. With the arrival of military installations in World War II, the city became the state’s largest city and the Great Falls we know today continued to be established.
