The history of Southaven begins with Kemmons Wilson, the founder of the Holiday Inn chain of hotels in the United States. Wilson wished to establish residential subdivisions for starter homes, and the region became a village in DeSoto County, Mississippi. The state officially incorporated Southaven as a city in 1980, and since then, it has experienced significant growth. In the 1970s, the construction of Interstate 55 through the city promoted growth in that region. People from famous locations such as Memphis, Chicago, St. Louis, and Jackson could easily and quickly access the city, influencing its economic and population growth. Since 1988, Baptist Hospital-DeSoto has significantly influenced the city’s growth because it is the first high-rise hospital in DeSoto County. Another development that characterizes Southaven’s history is the construction of a large-scale open-air mall, Southaven Towne Center, in 2007. The mall features restaurants and stores that have defined economic and social growth. The mall employs many people, and it serves the locals and visitors to the city. Since its incorporation, Southaven has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the southeastern United States. In the last two decades, the city’s population has tripled while its land area has doubled, and more growth is happening. Although the metropolis began in the 1980s, it has become the third-largest city in Mississippi.
