Is buying a mobile home in Gulfport, Mississippi really a good idea?
Gulfport is a moderately-sized city, but it still has a quite urban feel, especially for Mississippi. It offers good schools, a low crime rate, a culturally diverse population and a very low cost of living. It is not hard to see why there is such a drive to buy a mobile home in Gulfport these days. That said, the ‘small town – big city’ lifestyle has its disadvantages. One of those is that the city has grown only very slowly over the last handful of years, and new properties are very thin on the ground. Competition for the places that remain can be fierce.
In this article, we’ll explore some of the best neighborhoods for buying a mobile home in Gulfport. We’ll consider the city’s location and geography, the demographics of Gulfport and what there is to occupy you in the city – after all, 73,000 people require quite a few options for what to do on a Saturday night.
History of Gulfport
History of Gulfport
This area was originally the territory of the Choctaw tribe of Native Americans. While most of the other cities of the region – especially Biloxi and Mobile – were settled by the French in the 18th century, Gulfport dates back only to 1855 or so. At the time it was called Mississippi City, and the core of that settlement survives as a neighborhood within modern Gulfport. Gulfport was incorporated in its own name in 1898. Its early importance was as a port for the Gulf and ship island railroad, hence the name. After its natural harbor was deepened by dredging, it allowed the lumber mills farther inland in the state to access markets along the coast. By 1902 it was a working seaport, and it became the official port of entry for the district in 1904. It grew steadily until well into the 21st century, and had become the 2nd largest city in the state as early as 1993.

The city of Gulfport lies on the southern coast of Mississippi, between Biloxi and Long Beach. Its location on the Gulf of Mexico gives it a humid subtropical climate with short, mild winters and long, hot summers. The sea air does prevent the much higher summer temperatures to be found farther inland in the state, though. Gulfport, MS mobile homes are popular because they are well-suited to these conditions. The region is, however, prone to occasional hurricanes. Before you decide whether or not to buy a mobile home in Gulfport, though, think about where you would like to live, who you would like your neighbors to be, and what kind of amenities you need to be close to.
