Oakland was founded by Territorial Governor Lewis Cass in 1819. Oakland was twice the size it is now at the time of establishment. However, given the rapid population increase, other counties were from Oakland, reducing its size by half. The county experienced tremendous economic development in the 1840s with the construction of major transport systems like Woodward Avenue and the Pontiac Railroad. These developments helped attract more people to the county. Besides, the expansive road network made Oakland an industrial hub with over 40 lumber mills operating in the county.
The mills were crucial for economic development as they processed harvested wood across the state. They also served people in the Upper Peninsula. Pontiac was the first town in Oakland County, and it was located along the Clinton River. Later, the town became the county seat, housing important county offices. After the end of the American Civil War, Oakland County remained an agricultural-based economy, with many people depending on agriculture. The many small towns and villages in the county also ran their economy on agriculture.
Even though there were no major industries, Oakland remained a transportation hub in the region. It had three railway lines serving the state by the end of the 19th century. The presence of an expensive railway structure saw Oakland County attract carriage and wagon factories. This saw Oakland develop into a major urban center in the country. Detroit and Pontiac became the first towns to experience the introduction of streetcars in the 1890s.
