It was Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac who founded the city of Detroit in July 1701. He was a French trader, military leader and commanded Fort Michilimackinac. The British took over for about a year until Harrison's victory at the Thames and Commodore Perry's victory on Lake Erie when the Americans took control again. It wasn't until 1815 that Detroit got its city status and became the capital of Michigan from 1837 to 1847, after which Lansing became the capital.
