Looking for land in Maine? Originally part of Massachusetts in the late 1700s, Maine eventually was granted secession in 1820, becoming the 23rd State. As part of the Missouri Compromise, it was granted secession as a free state to keep balance between slave states in the South, in this case Missouri, and free states in the North. Originally home to hardened New England settlers, today's Mainers are similar to their ancestors, in that they are tough, but friendly and private, but with a strong sense of community. 

Located in the far Northeast of the U.S., Maine is one of the northernmost mainland states. The shoulder seasons can be very wet and the winter will bring a lot of snow in these areas, but of course the upside is that when summer rolls around the beaches can be enjoyed in warm sunshine, without much rain.

Families looking into land for sale in Maine are going to want to know where their kids can attend school. Younger families will be happy to hear that Maine ranks #12 when it comes to Pre-K to Grade 12. That’s a quite impressive rating for such a small state. 

For universities and colleges Maine has a list of well respected institutions. Bowdoin College is renowned for its Liberal Arts Program. Bates College is also well respected for their Liberal Arts Program and their Engineering Program, as well.
