Covington was initially known as “The Point '' due to its positioning at the Licking and Ohio Rivers. “The point” was later purchased by Richard Gano, John Gano, and Thomas Carneal, a trio of men who referred to themselves as “Covington Company.” After its purchase, it was positioned as the settlement of Covington and incorporated as a town. In honor of Leonard Covington, who died at the War of Crysler's Farm, the city was named after him. Later, the area was officially assimilated by the Kentucky General Assembly and elevated to its city position. Covington prospered as a center for tobacco and cigar making.
