The “old” Kansas City was incorporated in 1872. The first mayor, James Boyle, was elected on October 22, 1872, after Judge Hiram Stevens of the Tenth Judicial District ordered an election to be held in the city. In June 1880, John St. John, the Governor of Kansas, proclaimed Kansas as a city of the second class with Mayor Samuel McConnell present. The “new” Kansas City was formed after the consolidation of five municipalities: “old” Kansas City, Riverview, Wyandotte, Armstrong, and Armourdale. Kansas City experienced rapid economic and population growth in the 1890s because of the availability of many streetcars in Kansas City, Missouri. The city's population reached over 100,000 people for the first time in 1920. In 1997, voters approved the proposition to unify the city and county governments. This unification led to the creation of the Unified Government of Wyandotte. Kansas City was named after Missouri’s Kansas City because the leaders in the city wanted to capitalize on its success.

If you are a big racing car fan, one of the things you can do while living in Kansas City is to visit the Kansas Speedway. The Kansas Speedway is a 1.5-mile track and road course that hosts various types of racing, including the famous NASCAR Sprint Race Series. You can purchase a FanWalk pass that permits you to access the garage and infield, where you can see the car inspections and have a nice view of the pre-race concert. You can also visit the Richard Petty Driving Experience, where you can ride shotgun in a race car or drive one of the stock race cars if you are up to the task.

You can watch soccer and baseball matches while living in Kansas City, Kansas. Sporting Kansas City is a Major League Soccer franchise that currently plays its home games at Children’s Mercy Park. Sporting Kansas City is one of the league's founding members and has managed to turn many Kansas City residents into soccer fans. You can also watch the Kansas City Current, a women’s soccer team playing in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). If you are a baseball fan, you can watch the Kansas City Monarchs play their matches at Legends Field.

Other places you should visit include Zip KC, 7th Street Casino, Azura Amphitheater, and Big 11 lake, among others.
