Des Moines found its origin as Fort Des Moines, built at the Raccoon and Des Moines Rivers convergence. Initially, the Fort was constructed to control and supervise the activities of the Sauk and Meskwaki Indians. The destruction of the Indian's traditional way of life combined with the illegal whiskey trade did not fare well with the Indians. As a result, the tribes were detached from the Fort and pushed to the Indian Territory. Settlers moved to the abandoned Fort, and the area began to grow. The town was later designated as the county seat of Polk by the state legislature. Unfortunately, the growing town was destroyed by a devastating flood when the Raccoon and Des Moines Rivers rose to unprecedented heights. Des Moines was unified as a city with the name shortening from "Fort Des Moines'' to "Des Moines." The city experienced massive growth to the point that the capital state was moved from Iowa City to Des Moines. Although the Civil War slowed down the city's growth, the railroad's completion saw the city's expansion in size. The coal mining industry in the area grew into 23 different mines distributed around the city. The industry became the leading employer until the time coal resources were exhausted. At the turn of the Great Depression, the city began a project of creating large Beaux-Arts public buildings along the river. Under President Franklin Roosevelt and federal Civilian Conservation groups, ornate riverfront projects were completed. President Franklin began projects to create local employment and advance infrastructure during the post-Great Depression era. These projects led to the postindustrial decline. Since then, the city has transformed from blue-collar industrial jobs to the professional white-collar town it is today.
