Cedar Rapids is the second oldest city in Iowa, with its history dating back hundreds of years ago. The Iowa State Legislature formerly incorporated Cedar Rapids as a city on January 15, 1849. Within a few years, the plant had become one of the largest factories of its kind, employing over 500 people. Cedar Rapids' economy continued to grow into the 1990s, as more companies were established in the city. Today, the city has the second-largest economy in Iowa, with a significant number of people living here.
