History of Newark
Newark's history dates back to colonial times as an area inhabited by Native Americans. It was founded as a town in 1694 by settlers from the nearby Swedish colony of Fort Christina. The city was named after Newark-on-Trent in England and quickly became an important trading center for the region. In 1758, Newark became the county seat of New Castle County. During the American Revolution, Newark was occupied by British troops and served as a base for raiding expeditions by British forces. Newark was also the site of a major encampment for American soldiers during the war, and monuments were erected to them in the town's Linwood Cemetery after the conflict ended. After the Revolutionary War, Newark grew as an economic center with its shipbuilding industry thriving and new industries like silk stocking production emerging. After the Newark Academy and Delaware College (now the University of Delaware) got founded in 1769 and 1833, the town also became an educational center. Newark continued to grow in the 19th and 20th centuries, with new neighborhoods like Trolley Square developing and the population reaching over 30,000 by the mid-20th century. Today, Newark is a vibrant community with a strong economy and a rich history. The town is home to several historical landmarks and is also the site of the University of Delaware's main campus.
