San Bernardino County is a huge part of southern California. It was established in 1853 but its history begins way before that. Paleo-Indian sites that were discovered around the county indicate that it was inhabited in 10,000 BC. In the 1770s, Spanish explorers started to arrive in the area. In 1772, the Spanish military commander, Pedro Fages, reached the area.

In 1810, a church was established by the Missionaries from Mission San Gabriel Arcangel and it was named after Saint Bernardino of Siena. In 1821, several ranchos emerged after Mexico’s independence from Spain. In 1842, Rancho San Bernardino was established and this is where most of the relevant cities in the county can be found.

Just a few years after California was recognized as part of the United States, San Bernardino County was formally established. It is considered as one of the largest counties in the United States with an area of approximately 20,000 square miles. San Bernardino County is also made famous for its citrus farming.

In 1857, the Mormons were recalled to Utah, ending their influence in San Bernardino County. A popular area for winemaking is the Cucamonga region. In 1860, gold was discovered along the Holcomb and Bear Valleys. In 1870, silver was discovered in Ivanpah.

During the twentieth century, San Bernardino County continued to flourish. Now, there are more than two million people living in the county. Several cities have been established throughout the years. At the village of Politania, a church was built by the Spanish Missionaries from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. On May 20, 1810, it was named San Bernardino in honor of St. Bernardino of Siena. The name was given by Father Francisco Dumetz. A mountain peak in Southern California was also named San Bernardino. Additionally, the county was also named San Bernardino in honor of the saint. The mission farm, San Bernardino de Sena Estancia, was established in 1819. Today, it is known as the Redlands.
