The first recorded use of "Santa Clara" was in 1777, when Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded. The name referred to the Santa Clara River, which runs through the area. The mission was named for Saint Clare of Assisi, the founder of the Order of Poor Ladies or the Poor Clares.
In 1833, the Mexican government granted Rancho Rinconada del Arroyo de San Francisquito to Francisco María Ruiz, a sergeant in the colonial militia at the time. Ruiz built an adobe house on the ranch and became one of the first people to have houses in Santa Clara County, California.
