The Glenwood Cottages guest house, which subsequently grew into the world-famous Mission Inn Hotel and Spa, the enormous Mission Revival-style building in the United States, opened as Riverside grew. San Bernardino and San Diego counties were combined to form the new county. Seventy percent of voters approved the formation of Riverside County on May 2, 1893.

The city of Riverside, which serves as the county seat, inspired the name. Riverside County was founded in 1893 from a small portion of San Bernardino County and a more significant portion of San Diego County and was named after Riverside.
The Spanish missionaries of San Gabriel (Los Angeles County), San Juan Capistrano (Orange County), and San Luis Rey (San Diego) began settling the land in the late 18th century. They gradually began using the central valley in western Riverside County for grain and cattle production. Spain claimed all of California and Mexico during this time.
