History of Alameda County California

Alameda County, CA History

California's Alameda County was founded in 1853. Alvarado, now part of Union City, served as the county seat since the formation of Alameda, now part of Union City. It then moved to San Leandro in 1856, where the county courthouse was damaged in the terrible Hayward Fault earthquake of 1868. From 1872 to 1875, the county seat was re-established in the town of Brooklyn. Since 1873, Oakland has been the county seat, and Brooklyn is now a part of it.

Over the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, much of what is currently a densely populated district was established as a trolley car suburb of San Francisco. The nearby and closely connected Contra Costa County shares recorded history from Native American tribal lands to Spanish, Mexican ranches, farmland, ranches, orchards, then several city cores and suburbs.

Cultural diversity is a hallmark of Alameda County. The natural net increase in births over deaths and significant immigration has resulted in Alameda County attaining an enviable status of ethnic diversity in the Bay Area and the country.
