The area that would become the city was founded when the pioneers arrived in the area and settled near a spring at Mount Sequoyah. As a result of many loyal families settling in the area, Washington County was established. The county later changed to the Town of Fayetteville after General William Barry ordered the name change to avoid the confusion arising from another county in Hempstead having the same name. The name Fayetteville was chosen because James Buchanan and John Wooddy commissioners came from Fayetteville, Tennessee. Under the State Legislature Act, Fayetteville Town was incorporated as a city. After a decade, the first college known as Arkansas College was developed. It became the first-degree granting college in Arkansas. The college was in operation until the outbreak of the Civil War.
