The history of Maricopa County goes back to the days when it was inhabited by Native Americans, who called this place home. During the 1300s, the area was abandoned for unexplained reasons. There was agricultural activity that took place in the 1860’s, as settlers began to migrate out west. A period of rapid growth and development soon followed; things that have been the trademark of Maricopa County ever since. On February 14, 1871, the Territorial Legislature created Maricopa County, years before Arizona was to gain statehood. By 1872, there were over 700 people in the county and some 5,000 acres under cultivation.

This county was named after the Maricopa people, who called this place home. There are five Native American Reservations located in the county, including the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community that’s located east of Scottsdale and the Gila River Indian Community that’s located south of Chandler.

In July 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the Maricopa County metro area population grew by an average of 291 people every day. Maricopa County’s population grew by 86,820, more than any other county in the U.S! It’s also the most populous county in the state of Arizona and comprises more than half of Arizona’s population.
While this county has long been home to retirees who make their way south after retirement in search of better weather, it’s also experiencing a boom in working-age people as well. Industries in Maricopa County include construction, manufacturing, health care, social assistance, wholesale trade, professional and technical services, mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction.
Maricopa County has roughly 58 school districts and serves over 700,000 students. It is also home to
Arizona State University (ASU), a popular university that’s located in Phoenix and draws people in from all over the state, or indeed, from across the U.S. With many different strong academic departments and programs available, ASU has been ranked as one of the best universities for preparing graduates for jobs. Some of its best programs include management, public administration, environmental science and engineering, business administration, economics, and geography.
For high school and middle school, there are a wide range of schools, including public and private schools and many of them are highly rated. Noteworthy options include Basis Scottsdale Charter School, for children in fifth through twelfth grade. For boys, there’s Brophy College Preparatory School, a private school for boys in grades 6-12. For girls, there’s Girls Leadership Academy of Arizona, for girls in grades 9-12.
