Arizona History

The history of Maricopa County goes back to the days when it was inhabited by Native Americans, who called this place home. During the 1300s, the area was abandoned for unexplained reasons. There was agricultural activity that took place in the 1860’s, as settlers began to migrate out west. A period of rapid growth and development soon followed; things that have been the trademark of Maricopa County ever since. On February 14, 1871, the Territorial Legislature created Maricopa County, years before Arizona was to gain statehood. By 1872, there were over 700 people in the county and some 5,000 acres under cultivation.
