Fairbanks, Alaska's second-largest city, dates to August 26, 1901, when E.T. Barnette established a trading post on the Chena River's south bank. Gold was found 16 miles north of the post a year later. Fairbanks was named after Indiana Senator Charles Fairbanks, who subsequently became Vice President of the U.S. Judge Wickersham moved the Third Judicial District's seat from Eagle to Fairbanks in 1903.
